Joe Baker, 63, an economics professor at Southern Utah University had just come back from his daily run when he went into cardiac arrest. Jake Probert, a student, was truly in the right place at the right time and saw Baker collapse. He rushed to his side and with the help of Ryan Fowles, another student, they were able to perform CPR and ultimately save Baker’s life.
Fowles said that the last time he had ever performed CPR was when he was 11 and took a class. But just a few days earlier, his brother-in-law had taken a course and updated Ryan on the new procedure — something Ryan feels, was more than just a coincidence.
In an even more interesting twist, Jared Wenn, an EMT, was eating lunch near by when he felt the sudden urge to turn on his pager, just in case. He overheard what happened to Baker and immediately rushed over with his EMT kit.
This is truly a case of three heroic citizens being in the right place at the right time and being able to save the life of a man because of it.
