Even heroes need saving from time to time. Commander Gary Dunlap was laughing and joking with his classmates at the police academy seconds before he went into cardiac arrest and was found slumped over at his desk. Sgt. Michael Evans, Lt. Mark Gardner and Det. Kim Atwood all sprang into action and did what they were taught to do: start CPR. While the three worked hard performing compressions and supplying oxygen to Dunlap, Commander Michael Springer ran and grabbed a nearby defibrillator.
The three continued until paramedics arrived. Dunlap was conscious by then and had no memory what had just occurred. He was taken to the hospital where it is said he was in fair condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
