If you encounter someone that may need CPR, checking for responsiveness is always the first thing you want to do. In order to do this, you are going to:
1) Support their head and neck. Turn them so that they are lying flat, face-up, on a hard surface.
2) Remove any clothing, objects, or furniture that could possibly harm them or you.
3) Tap and shout, “Are you OK?”
4) If you hear them gasping or struggling to breathe, this is not normal breathing! They are in need of CPR or an AED defibrillator.
5) Call for help and dial 911. If someone is with you, one of you should call 911 and speak to the operator. Be sure to answer all of the dispatcher’s questions, and remain calm. Answering their questions will not delay the arrival of help.
6) Start compressions or retrieve an AED if it is available to you. Remember, if you do not know the exact age of the victim, always treat them as an adult and use adult CPR!
