Kendall Stilwell can still remember the day that her grandmother, Rita Lovato, collapsed and stopped breathing.
“I felt really scared because I thought I was going to really lose my nana. I called 911, and I began to do CPR. It was a really scary moment,” she recalls.
It was a bright summer day when Lovato, 71, went into cardiac arrest early in the morning. Young Kendall was the one who found her. While on the phone with 911, she spoke to a firefighter/paramedic, who was able to calm her down. He talked her through all of the steps of CPR, even counting the beats with her. Kendall kept performing CPR until paramedics arrived and took her grandmother to the hospital, where she made a full recovery. “I was really happy that she made it.”
