A one-month old baby is recovering beautifully this week after an incident that is every parent’s worst nightmare. Baby Nolan and his family were shopping at a ballet shop when the clerk heard the family’s frantic cries for help. She immediately dialed 911.
Thankfully for Nolan parents, Lesley Reckford, a former lifeguard, was nearby and rushed to help the tiny infant. She put him on the ground and began rescue breathing.
Two blocks away, Jeff Olson’s phone went off. He had recently downloaded an app called “Pulse Point”, which alerts people who are CPR-trained and are nearby. It also shows you where the nearest AED is located. And in an even more coincidental turn of events, Olson is also a volunteer EMT. When his app showed him where to go, he rushed off to help baby Nolan. Even though he had never performed CPR on an infant before, he and Reckford still managed to help Nolan until paramedics arrived.
Nolan’s cardiac arrest was most likely triggered by the fact that he was born with full-grown, adult-sized kidneys, despite being an infant. Doctors believe that the kidneys were “jamming” up his other organs which led to cardiac arrest. While Nolan is recuperating, his family has started to learn CPR.
