Amanda Darby is a nurse at a local hospital in Lake St. Louis, Missouri. A few weeks ago, she and her family trekked to a nearby town for her son’s ice hockey tournament. Several families from the team and the Darby’s were at the hotel, enjoying some much-needed rest and relaxation at the pool after the tournament. It wasn’t long before another large groups of children came by for a birthday party, and soon, the whole area was filled with kids having a good time.
St. Charles County Police Officer Robert Bell was among the parents watching his children play. Suddenly, he saw another parent with the hockey team dive into the water, still wearing his clothes, and pull out a small girl – 6 year-old Kynnedi Terry-Nunley.
Darby and Bell knew they had to do something and sprang into action. While Darby performed compressions, Bell turned Kynnedi’s head to the side in order for water to come out of her lungs. They estimated that they kept this brave display of teamwork up for about six minutes until paramedics took over.
Kynnedi was taken to the hospital where although she was understandably shaken up by the incident, made a full recovery. Kynnedi’s mother wasn’t at the pool that day, but she and Darby have been in contact through Facebook almost every day. The two plan to meet in February so that Terry can properly thank Darby for saving her daughter’s life.
Darby, on the other hand, insists she was just doing her job. “I just always wanted to do it. My mom has pictures of me when I was about 5-years-old in a nurses outfit,” said Darby.
