JJ Pesany went into cardiac arrest after receiving an electric shock h from a portable goal post and a high voltage power line at Lancaster High School Athletic Field. Detective Keith Kerl was only 90 seconds away from the scene when he heard the emergency call over his radio. Kerl was able to administer CPR and use a defibrillator on Pesany before he was taken to the hospital. His life-saving actions saved Pesany’s life, and for that, Pesany’s family will forever be grateful to Kerl.
But Kerl wanted just one thing from Pesany’s family: he wanted them to become trained and certified in CPR. This was something they did hesitate to think about – after all, Kerl did just save the life of JJ. “Keith said he wanted me to learn CPR, because he saved my life and that’s one thing he wanted me to learn how to do,” said JJ. So last Friday, JJ, his family, and 20 of his football teammates arrived at the local fire hall to learn CPR. They were all given CPR AED Course Completion Cards that are valid for 2 years. Kerl says that the training center has given out 1,000 CPR cards in just the past year.
Not only did Keith Kerl save a life, but he helped the Pesany’s learn a valuable life-saving skill, which just might save someone else one day.
